Past Present Future 4

Performers from Newcastle High, the Muloobinbar Dancers, prepare for their original interpretation of the local creation story Tittalick The Frog.

Project Summary

Past Present Future 4 (PPF4) is an Aboriginal youth arts project by the Loft Youth Venue in partnership with the local Aboriginal community. The project culminated in a day of celebration at the Newcastle Foreshore on November 9 2007 attended by more than 200 young people. This was preceded by a 4 month workshop program featuring music, dance, puppet-making and visual art workshops. Loft staff attended training via a number of cultural camps. Major partners included Yarnteen Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation, TAFE and Hunter Aboriginal Youth Council (HAYC). The Loft also facilitated mentoring and leadership training for members of HAYC. An On Track leadership Grant from the Foundation For Young Australians will strengthen this relationship thereby developing further the Loft's role as a youth arts and cultural resource for Newcastle. PPF5 will happen in 2008.

"Cities must trade in cultural cringe for a growing sense of confidence in our distinctiveness. They must try to be somewhere, not anywhere in the extended global sprawl of electronic suburbia. Cities must wilfully believe that the unique combination of events that may fuse here is just as compelling as those that may fuse somewhere else. Cities need to involve their people in making and remaking their own mythology, and create something that is truly unique." Marcus Westbury
