Project Summary

Bathurst Regional Art Gallery’s Gathering: Building Confident Teachers & Students workshops provided K-6 students and visual arts teachers with access to a free high quality professional development and workshop program. It targeted disadvantaged and/or remote schools, with an enrolment of less than 25 and within a 100km radius.

The project was funded under the Arts NSW ConnectEd strategy which subsidises student travel costs.

The program was conducted by artist, Christine McMillan and BRAG’s Education and Public Programs Manager, Brad Hammond and focused on two exhibitions, Twined Together: Kunmadj Njalehnjaleken (a Museum Victoria Travelling exhibition) and Christine McMillan: Gathering (a Bathurst Regional Art Gallery local artist project exhibition).

Twined Together showcased woven baskets and mats from the women artists of Gunbalanya in western Arnhem Land and Christine McMillan: Gathering exhibited recent works by the artist made from gauze, echidna spines and grass seeds and included objects, photographs and videos.

"Cities must trade in cultural cringe for a growing sense of confidence in our distinctiveness. They must try to be somewhere, not anywhere in the extended global sprawl of electronic suburbia. Cities must wilfully believe that the unique combination of events that may fuse here is just as compelling as those that may fuse somewhere else. Cities need to involve their people in making and remaking their own mythology, and create something that is truly unique." Marcus Westbury
