Unity in Diversity: Connecting Clarence Communities Through Culture : CLARENCE VALLEY CULTURAL PLAN 2007 – 2012

Creative community engagement at Yamba

Project Summary

The Clarence Valley Cultural Plan sets out a Vision for the cultural development of the Clarence Valley over the next 10 years. The plan is a tool to assist Council and community build a rich and vibrant cultural experience for all residents of the Valley.

The cultural planning process brought together the previously fragmented communities of the newly amalgamated Councils of Copmanhurst, Grafton, Maclean and Pristine Waters. The process established specific “cultural values” which have been embedded in The Sustainability Framework, which is the new Clarence Valley Council’s key strategic planning mechanism.

The Cultural Plan was developed by Cultural Development Officer Brendan Smith, mentored by Sue Boaden, over a one year time frame. The process was community based and innovative, and the outcome is a plan which is both distinctive and practical, and which has forged new partnerships between the community and council.

"Cities must trade in cultural cringe for a growing sense of confidence in our distinctiveness. They must try to be somewhere, not anywhere in the extended global sprawl of electronic suburbia. Cities must wilfully believe that the unique combination of events that may fuse here is just as compelling as those that may fuse somewhere else. Cities need to involve their people in making and remaking their own mythology, and create something that is truly unique." Marcus Westbury
