Neighbourhood Stories (working title): Parkour and Urban Movement Workshops

Ali Kadhim, Parkour Artist-in-Resident based at ICE led an introductory workshop in October 2007, imparting skills and techniques to safely engage in Parkour for local young residents of Kingswood Park.

Project Summary

Workshops in Parkour have commenced in Kingswood Park, an initiative of Penrith City Council in association with Information and Cultural Exchange (ICE).

The philosophy of Parkour empowers participants to overcome obstacles through the art of movement, proving an ideal activity for young people from this area.

This project is part of Neighbourhood Stories (a working title), an initiative of the Neighbourhood Renewal Program led by Penrith City Council working with local communities in telling their stories in creative ways, across selected neighbourhoods identified under the NSW average for social disadvantage.

Each community will have the opportunity to work with a community cultural development practitioner to express their unique voice and experience of the place they live, culminating in an event and publication to showcase the journey, demonstrating Council’s commitment to empower and strengthen the voices of local community through cultural expression.

"Cities must trade in cultural cringe for a growing sense of confidence in our distinctiveness. They must try to be somewhere, not anywhere in the extended global sprawl of electronic suburbia. Cities must wilfully believe that the unique combination of events that may fuse here is just as compelling as those that may fuse somewhere else. Cities need to involve their people in making and remaking their own mythology, and create something that is truly unique." Marcus Westbury
