Penrith Regional Gallery Capital Works and Heritage Conservation Project

The house bequeathed by the Lewers, part of the Penrith Regional Gallery.

Project Summary

The Capital Works & Heritage Conservation project undertook the integrated re-development and conservation of the historic Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest. The project, designed by Australian architect Andrew Andersons, delivered a range of new building additions - as well as conserving heritage buildings, gardens and artworks. The project, beautiful in form, rigorous in aesthetic integrity and sensitive in execution - has increased the operational function and heritage significance of the Gallery and its site. The original buildings and gardens (and artworks) are of great cultural significance – and sensitivity. Importantly, the project (at all times sympathetic to the fragile nature of the site), has added another layer of fine architectural presence. Guided by a specially commissioned Heritage Garden Conservation Development and Management Plan, a comprehensive range of conservation works (within the capital works program) has restored the Gallery’s celebrated heritage gardens to pristine condition and artistic integrity.

"Cities must trade in cultural cringe for a growing sense of confidence in our distinctiveness. They must try to be somewhere, not anywhere in the extended global sprawl of electronic suburbia. Cities must wilfully believe that the unique combination of events that may fuse here is just as compelling as those that may fuse somewhere else. Cities need to involve their people in making and remaking their own mythology, and create something that is truly unique." Marcus Westbury
