KNOCKOUT
Project Summary
KNOCKOUT was an exhibition showcasing paraphernalia and prizes from Indigenous Australian boxing. Curated by Penrith Regional Gallery’s Indigenous Curator, Zona Wilkinson, KNOCKOUT reflected Aboriginal Australia’s domination of the sport, with a roll call of some of Aboriginal Australia’s finest athletes: Ron Richards, Dave Sands, Jack Hassen, George Bracken, Joey Donovan, Tony Mundine and Anthony ‘The Man’ Mundine. Their trophies, photographs and memorabilia were exhibited alongside those of non-Indigenous Australian legends Les Darcy, Jonny Famechon, Lester Ellis, Jeff Fenech, Danny Green, and Muhammad Ali. Exhibition highlights included photographs of Lionel Rose and Anthony Mundine by acclaimed Aboriginal photographer Mervyn Bishop, and George Bracken’s Australian lightweight champion belt. Zona Wilkinson conceptualized the exhibition, negotiated loans of boxing memorabilia, and organised George Bracken to speak at motivational events for local Aboriginal children. The exhibition attracted excellent regional media coverage as well as coverage by Koori radio.
