"Jarjum Wajehla (children speaking)”
Project Summary
In 2007 Tweed River Art Gallery initiated “Jarjum Wajehla (children speaking)”, a visual arts project that supported practicing ATSI artists and encouraged the development of nineteen young creative thinkers from the Tweed’s ATSI community. A series of art workshops for school students were devised and led by four Aboriginal artists from the Northern Rivers region – respected elder Aunty Joyce Summers, Dennis Monks, Garth Lena and Frances Belle Parker. During NAIDOC Week, a public exhibition of colourful workshop outcomes showcased student artwork. This project provided a valuable employment and professional development opportunity to local artists, who passed on their cultural and practical knowledge to new generations. With enhanced confidence, students made new connections with their peers, developed artistic skills and increased their comfort level in participating in gallery programs. Partners: local schools, Tweed Wollumbin Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, Tweed Shire Council’s Aboriginal Advisory Committee, the Friends of the Gallery.
