Digitisation of Tenterfield newspapers provides keyword access to local history

Project Summary

Keyword searching of historic Tenterfield newspapers is now available at Tenterfield Public Library, thanks to a State Library Development Grant of $20,775. Masters of Tenterfield newspapers 1875-1955 on microfilm were released by the University of New England to W & F Pascoe Pty Ltd for scanning into Tif (Bitonal) format at 400ppi. The images were supplied on DVD for conversion to a searchable Tif format via Finereader from ABBYY Software using Optical Character Recognition, then imported into a repository in Captaris Alchemy Gold. The digitised newspaper archive fills a cultural need for speedy access to Tenterfield’s recorded history. It is accessible on all 8 public computers in the Library and is proving a popular, time-saving resource for family and local historians and students. Client evaluation will continue for 6 months from the September 2007 launch. The Project is a front-runner in the digitisation of rural newspapers in NSW public libraries.

"Cities must trade in cultural cringe for a growing sense of confidence in our distinctiveness. They must try to be somewhere, not anywhere in the extended global sprawl of electronic suburbia. Cities must wilfully believe that the unique combination of events that may fuse here is just as compelling as those that may fuse somewhere else. Cities need to involve their people in making and remaking their own mythology, and create something that is truly unique." Marcus Westbury
